Screen Time

I’m sure a better writer has written a blog about this, but let’s talk about TV and screen time for children!
I’ll be completely open: we should avoid screentime for children when possible… but I also have three children of my own, work full time, serve on several organizational boards, and still have to make dinner every night (come on kids, why do you need to eat every day?).
So, if you are traveling long distances, taking a flight, or simply need to care for your own mental health, these are the shows that I am a fan of from both the parent and educator sides of my brain.
Slow paced and good content:
Puffin Rock
Little Bear
Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood
Dainel Tiger’s Neighborhood
Tumble Leaf
Barney & Friends
Franklin
Reading Rainbow
Carl the Collector
How it's Made
A bit faster, but overall great:
Bluey
Numberblocks
Dora the Explorer
Octonauts
The Wild Thornberrys
The Zoo (Animal Planet)
The Magic School Bus
Work it out Wombats
Now, I’m sure anyone can Google this list and find something wrong with each of these shows, but these are a hit in my book. I find https://www.commonsensemedia.org to be a good resource to find age-appropriate shows.
You can rest easy knowing that The Mays School is a screen free campus, so you don’t have to worry about any of this during the school day. But we’re also judgement-free and understand that everyone needs a moment of calm. We only suggest that you are intentional on the content and the amount of time!
Love,
Jessi
