Important PTO Updates - August

Hi, MAYS families! We hope you enjoyed the first week of school as much as we did! I personally had some very tired kiddos last weekend, but it sounds like friends were made and trees were climbed. So, all in all, a great success!
Unfortunately, the PTO had a setback during this first week: Callye Emmons--our fearless PTO leader for the last 18 months--made the difficult decision to step down from her role as President. She was instrumental in starting the MAYS PTO, and she is an incredibly important member of our MAYS community. She wrote a letter explaining her decision, and I've included that below. When you see Callye in the hallways, please join us in thanking her for all that she has done for the PTO and the school!
Luckily, Nishi Kothari (the PTO Legal Advisor) did not a miss beat to bring us into compliance with the PTO bylaws. For context, the PTO bylaws require three Executive Board positions to be occupied: President, Secretary, and Treasurer. As a result, the remaining Executive Board has appointed Nicki Hewell (currently the Communications Director) to the role of Interim President.
We are hoping to make this transition as seamless as possible for everyone. However, there are a few administrative changes that are being implemented to assist in the transition. Most importantly, the first PTO meeting has been moved from August 28th to September 16th from 8:30-9:30am. We recognize that Wednesdays are less convenient than Fridays, and we intend for this to be a one off. To help parents attend this meeting, we will provide a Google Meet link for those who are only able to call in. To those who can make it in person, we are bringing coffee and donuts to sweeten the deal.
This first meeting will be an important one! We are going to vote on a slate of officers as well as the annual budget, so we hope you can join. We have also been tracking responses to the Membership Confirmation form, including your interests in committee roles! We will be kicking off those committees at the September 16th meeting. If you're interested in a committee but cannot attend this meeting, please don't worry--we will have many more opportunities for you to get to know your committee!

Despite this news, one important thing has not changed: we want to make the MAYS PTO a welcoming and fun community for our families. With that in mind, our Community Committee Chairs have been hard at work planning Parent Meetups to kick off the year, and three events have already been scheduled!
Please consider RSVPing for any events you plan to attend so that we have a headcount for the reservations.

We hope you will join us at one or all of these events. As these communities grow, we hope to expand these offerings to meet more interests! A special thank you to Robson Baker and Avni Chopra for leading Dads Club and Moms Club, respectively.
SEPTEMBER 10th SPIRIT NIGHT
While we have your attention, we also would like to put our first 2026-27 Spirit Night Fundraiser on your radar! This will be taking place on September 10th. To participate, simply eat at Mia's Table Bellaire (includes Dine-In, To-Go, and Online orders) then head over to Cosmic Ice Cream for dessert! You can participate by eating at one or both establishments.
These two amazing local spots are giving 20% of their sales on September 10th to the MAYS PTO. Guests must mention the fundraiser name when ordering or picking up.
As an added incentive, the classroom with the highest participation in the Spirit Night wins a Cookie & Ice Cream Party delivered by Mia’s!
We hope to fill up both restaurants so that our kids can have a great night with their friends while we fundraise for the PTO!
Message to the MAYS Community from Former PTO President Callye Emmons
Congratulations on making it through an exciting first week of school! It has been wonderful seeing so many smiling faces in the hallways and hearing the joyful anticipation of what is to come this year.
I wanted to share that I have made the difficult decision to step down as MAYS PTO President. My professional situation has changed unexpectedly, and as a result I unfortunately will not have the capacity to give this organization the time, focus and support that it needs and deserves. I have done my best to lead the PTO with the good of the school as the no. 1 priority, and that focus is what led to this decision. I want to do everything I can to support its future success, even if that means no longer serving as President.
This school and community means so much to our family and I'm honored to have been part of this organization's launch and growth over the last 18 months. I'm confident the PTO will thrive and continue to do great things for our school, and I will continue to support the organization as much as I can.
I hope you all can attend the first PTO Meeting on Wednesday, September 16th. Until then, see you in the hallway and thank you for supporting our school.
